SmartWill is a disruptive people centric will and estate planning service which is available 24/7/265 and provides each member with lifetime access and unlimited updates. The platform offers technical support, and every will is checked by the fiduciary legal team to ensure accuracy and provide advice. SmartWill intelligently assists members by suggesting gaps in their estate/portfolio and offers solutions.

Who needs a Will?

Every South African over the age of 18 but especially if you are:

  • Elderly or know that you are ill.
  • Married or divorced.
  • Have children.
  • Own property or significant assets.
  • Have a trust or offshore assets.

Having a will is important to make your wishes known at death in order to take better care of the member’s family by removing delays in the winding up of your estate. It is also important to regularly update your will to document changes in your financial and personal circumstances.

How does SmartWill work?

SmartWill uses technology to make it easier and faster than ever before to create a personalized will anywhere, anytime, in the palm of your hand.

  • Upon registration members are required to complete a questionnaire which covers each aspect of the will that an Executor would need to be made aware of in order to wind up an estate quickly and efficiently
  • During this process, the member can reach out to the customer service team for assistance via Chatbot or by calling the assistance hotline. If further assistance is required, members can schedule an appointment with a specialist which is conducted telephonically or in Hangouts.
  • The completed questionnaire is then pulled through to a customized will where gaps in the Members' estate/portfolio are identified and additional services or products are suggested. 
  • Once the member has completed this section it is sent to the legal team for review to ensure accuracy and to provide additional advice and assistance if necessary.
  • Specific instructions are provided to the member to ensure that the will is correctly signed, and safety stored.
  • Members can also access the calculators and view the value of Estate Duty, Capital Gains Tax and Transfer Fees, applicable to the winding up of the estate. 
  • The members will thereafter receive automated reminders to ensure that relevant changes and updates are recorded annually.

 

Additional Subscription-Based Services

A range of additional subscription-based services are available to members directly from the SmartWill portal:

  • SmartStorage offers safe and secure storage of the signed original will. This includes the cost of courier anywhere in the country once a year. The member provides the original printed and signed will and SmartWill will do the rest. This service is included for a fee of R220 once-off (Including VAT).
  • SmartCheck – SmartCheck runs a monthly check against the Department of Home Affairs death recovers and will proactively notify beneficiaries in the event of the member’s death. This service is included for a fee of R110 once-off (Including VAT).
  • SmartExecutor significantly reduces the cost of executor fees. The typical cost is 4.03% of the total estate value. With SmartExecutor members save up to 40% on executor fees and up to 10% on conveyancing fees. This service is included for a fee of R220 once-off (Including VAT).

Terms and Conditions

  • Members are required to accept the online Terms and Conditions upon initial registration to

the SmartWill portal.

  • Although all reasonable efforts are taken to ensure the correctness of the SmartWill,

SmartWill will depend on the accuracy of the information captured by the customer. (If the

customer does not insert the correct information, SmartWill cannot guarantee or warrant the

content, correctness and legality of the SmartWill).

  • Specific instructions are provided for to the member outlining the correct procedure to be

following for signature and storage of the will. SmartWill cannot be held liable if these

instructions are not correctly followed.

  • Members receive an annual reminder to update their SmartWill and are required to ensure

that their contact details are regularly updated.
